A Curated Japanese Powder Journey.

Japan Ski Experience

Deep snow. Quiet rituals. One of the most distinctive winter journeys in the world.

Japan has a way of making winter feel entirely different. The snow is part of it, of course. Hokkaido is famous for its light, abundant powder, sheltered tree skiing and days that can feel almost impossibly soft underfoot. But the real magic lies in everything around it: the steam of an onsen after skiing, the precision of a sushi counter, the warmth of a small izakaya, the quiet beauty of the forests and the unmistakable sense that each day has been carefully considered.

This journey is designed for those who want more than a standard ski holiday. Built around Niseko, Furano and the powder-rich mountains of Hokkaido, it combines guided skiing, local knowledge, private transfers, thoughtful accommodation and the kind of cultural moments that make Japan so memorable.

Created with our specialist Japan partners, this is a winter journey for skiers who want to discover the country properly — with the right people, in the right places, at the right time.

Suggested Shape of the Journey

Begin with a night in Tokyo before flying north to Hokkaido. Spend the first part of the trip in Niseko, exploring its famous powder, tree skiing and lively dining scene, before travelling onwards towards Furano for quieter mountains, deeper local culture and access to some of central Hokkaido’s most rewarding terrain.

For those looking for something more adventurous, the journey can include cat skiing by the coast, ski touring on volcanic peaks, or time in the wider Daisetsuzan National Park.

Japan Ski Experience
Why We Love it

Japan rewards those who know where to look. On the surface, this is a powder trip. In reality, it is far more layered. One day might be spent chasing snow through quiet tree runs outside Niseko; another may take you towards Furano, Asahidake or one of Hokkaido’s lesser-known resorts where the pace slows and the landscapes feel more remote. Evenings are just as important: ramen, sushi, sake, snow falling outside, and the familiar ritual of sinking into hot mineral water after a day in the mountains. What makes this journey work is the guiding. The right local host transforms Japan from fascinating to unforgettable. They know where the snow is best, which restaurants are worth the drive, which onsens are quietest and how to shape each day around weather, ability and mood.

  • Strong intermediate to expert skiers
  • Powder lovers
  • Groups of friends
  • Families with adventurous skiers
  • Skiers looking for something beyond the Alps
  • Guests who value culture as much as conditions

The best conditions are usually found in January and February, when Hokkaido is most reliable for deep, consistent powder. Late December to March can also work well, depending on the style of trip, but peak dates should be planned well in advance.

This journey is created in partnership with Mabey Ski, Japan specialists with extensive first-hand knowledge of the country’s ski regions, guides, properties and local experiences. Their team has personally skied, stayed and dined across Japan, with relationships built over years rather than seasons.
